Class Assignments and Discussion for Agricultural Computer Applications

What’s ahead for the next (last) month

It’s been a long haul, and you all have hung in there really well.  We’ve only three more weeks of instruction, and this week’s a short one.  So here’s what we will be doing for the next four weeks!  I am changing it from the initial scheduled  lessons on the syllabus, so heads up!!!

Week 11/23 – Thanksgiving Week

Short Week – the in class assignment will be PowerPoint 3.4.  This one will teach you lots of new tricks, pay special attention to the Slide Master, Smart Art, and inserting Tables and Charts.  If you can’t make class due to the Holiday, please complete this assignment on your own.  It’s rather important!

Home Work – I need you to start working on Project X, the Business Plan.  This project assignment is going to take the place of the portfolio item that is mentioned on the syllabus.  It will be worth 5% of the course grade.  It is also taking the place of the test for this section, so spend the time on it that it deserves.  It will be due before the first class the week of Dec 7 (week before finals.)

Also, if you do not finish 3.4 in class be sure to finish it at home, this one has some important skills in it you need to know.

If you can’t make class, or want a review, here are some video tutorials on the important topics of today.

The PM class will be taking their Excel test this week as well!

Week of 11/30 -

We will be continuing to work in PowerPoint, this week we will be doing the harder items as well as practicing more with tables, charts, slide templates, and animations.

Class Work: PowerPoint Projects 4.1 and 4.2 (pages 52-61).  I also want to work with ripping and embedding movies.

Home Work:  Continue working on the Business Plan Presentation, Project X.  This is due the following week.

Week of 12/7 – Final Week of Classes, Last Chance for Any Late Work

This week marks the last chance to turn anything in late, make up any test, and so on.  After this week conclude I will not be able to accept any late work.  Grades are due shortly after the finals next week, so this is it!

We will be doing review for the final this entire week.  Business Plan Presentations are due the first class, and I will be previewing some of the more impressive ones on Thursday, time willing.

The in class assignments will be the review assignments, and each day of review is heavily graded for participation, so make sure you are there for these!

Week of 12/14 – Finals Week!

There are of course no regular classes this week, just the finals.  Your final in this class will involve creating a document in Word, a Spreadsheet, and a small PowerPoint.  Here are the times of the finals, if you have a scheduling conflict let me know BEFORE this week.  I can’t accept late finals unless arranged ahead of time.

The AM class meets December 15, Tuesday at 10am to 12:50

The PM class meets December 16, Wednesday at 7 pm to 9:50 pm not at 6!

Week 11/16

The AM Class had the Excel Test this week, while the PM class had a review assignment for their test next week (11/25).

There was no homework assigned this week, and the only in class assignment was PowerPoint 2.2.

Week 11/9

We are finally in the last week of Excel instruction.  Hopefully you’ve learned a lot, and now feel comfortable using Excel to calculate your financial records, make charts, and analyze data.

For this final week we will be doing assignments 21.1, 21.2 and 22.2 – it’s more on charts.  This of course is for the day class, as the Wednesday night class is out for Veteran’s Day.  The homework for this week is to continue to work on the Financial Reports, from page 41 in the back of the book.  These are due next week!

NOTICE:

The Grades have been updated as of Wednesday.  Please see if you agree with your grade and turned in work.  If I missed something, please LET ME KNOW immediately.

Also, we have the EXCEL Test next week on the first day of class that week.  In anticipation of this we will be having a review this week as well.  For those in the night class, we will do a short review, do a bit on PowerPoint then give the test.

Week of 11/2

We are getting to the end of Excel now, so it’s time to put all these skills to use and try something a bit more complicated.

We will once more be deviating from the syllabus assigned work to do a Feed Calculator.  This project contains everything you have learned so far: formulas, functions, if statements, lookups, and graphs.   There is a PowerPoint that guides you through the assignment, so if you miss class be sure to dowload these files and complete on your own.

HOMEWORK: We will drop the Web Page homework assignment, and begin on part III, the Financial Reports on page 30 of the projects.  You will have TWO weeks to do this section, but don’t leave it for the last minute as this is a BIGGER homework assignment than we have had so far.

Home Work Source Files:

  1. III.A. Personnel Plan
  2. III.B. Revenues and Cost of Sales
  3. III.C. Cash Flow
  4. III.D. Income Statement
  5. III.E. Balance Sheet

Week of 10/26

Big Week – it’s Tables, PivotTables, and Charts week!

The biggest part of the week, if you missed it, was using PivotTables.  I have uploaded the PowerPoint for this, which you can download here.: Pivot Table Presentation –> I would right click on the link, and choose save target, don’t just click it.

In the presentation, ignore the Extra Credit questions and the bit about a report.  This presentation was used as a homework assignment last year.

You will also need the datafile that goes with it, you can download that from here: Sales Database Practice File

Home Work this week was from the back of the book, the Invitation Assignment, on page 40.  There is no source file, yuo will need to add your own data.

Good Luck, and don’t miss NEXT WEEK as we have a big assignment that would be really tough to do on your own.

Week of 10/19

I want to divert from the planned lessons a bit to show you some areas of Excel the text doesn’t cover very well.  To this end, make sure you view last weeks PowerPoint on Vlookups, and do the exercises there.  This week we will be doing the following exercises in stead of the text assignments.

Vlookup and If Statement Practice

Week of 10/12 – Excel: Formulas, Lists, and Lookups

This week we moved in to some trickier topics in Excel: creating formulas, using functions, making lists, and using Lookup Statements.

If you missed class you missed out on the PowerPoint that describes how to create Lookup Statements.  You can view by clicking here.

In addition we practiced with Vlookup and Hlookups, so after viewing the PowerPoint try you hand at these practices, found by clicking here.

Both are stored on Google Documents, which is something new I am trying.  Please let me know if you have any difficulties with them.

Grades are complete, everything sent in before Friday I have graded.  If you didnt seem to get credit for something, please check your mail box, resend it and let me know!  Thanks.

Excel Week 1

Last week saw the Word Practical Exam and the first assignments in Excel.

There was an extension on the homework assignment Integration Project IV, which is due at the start of this week.

For class work for the week of 9/28, there was:  1.1, 2.1,3.1 (day 1) & 4.2, 5.1, 6.1 (day 2).

Wrapping up Word

First month of classes is coming up soon, and it’s time to start wrapping up MS Word and get in to MS Excel.    This of course means, Examination Next Week.

To that end, we will have one more week of MS Word. This week we will be:

  • Formatting Reports: creating cover pages and using words Citation generator (13.2)
  • Format an Annual Report using columns, break and design templates (14.4)
  • Create a web page using a Word Template (16.2)
  • Section Review on Word

Homework:

This week for homework, we will be creating a  logo for your project company, then making letterhead and business cards.  Follow the steps on page 28 of the Integration section in the back of the book.

Next you will be formatting a business plan and create a cover plan.  Be sure to isnsert your new logo you created in the first assignment above!  (See Intregration Projects, Page 34 for more.)  Skip the parts that mention Excel, pretty much just do the first page and a cover page.  You can use the paint brush tool on the rest of it.  I am only interested in what you can do in W0rd.

Due midnight before the first day of class the following week, as usual.

NOTE: This week we will also have our first section review.  These reviews are worth 10% of your over all grade, and there are only three of them.  They can not be made up, so make a special effort to attend.

If you need the data files for this class, you can download them from the publisher here:

 More about the Examination:

The examination will be a hands of practical, you will recreate a newsletter.  I will give you some documents and pictures, then a print out of the final result.  You will attempt to recreate the newsletter with the parts as closely as you can.  To prepare for this, we will have the review, as mentioned above, and you can practice with assignment 10.1 and 10.2.

First Day of Class

Again Welcome!

Here’s some more directions on what we are doing this first day -

First, setup your college email address, this is the one that ends in student.yosemite.edu

To find directions for the sign on to http://piratesnet.mjc.edu then scroll way down on the current student page.  Bottom left you will find a link to Activate Student Email Account.

Now you are ready to do the class work for the day — edit a Word Document.  This lesson is in the textbook on page 8, no book yet?  Don’t worry.

If you don’t have a book yet I have supplied the first few chapters online, you will need to sign in to WebCT the college’s online classroom.  You can use these short cuts:

AM Class: http://tinyurl.com/lczsqz
PM Class: http://tinyurl.com/AgWebCT (shortcut url)

Logon using your W number and if this is the first time using it, your password is your 6 digit birthdate.  So June 3 1990 would be 060390.  Once in, find the Assignments area.  We are doing assignment WD 1.3 .

Now you will need the source file to work on, this is in the folder there called Data Files for Homework.  Open this, then click the one you want.

A note on downloading files – Internet Explorer may try to “protect you” and stop you from downloading the files.  The computer may make a “Boop” noise, and a bar will appear across the top of the screen.  Just click the bar and choose download.  Next you will see the option to either Open or Save, DO NOT CLICK OPEN, choose save and save it on your computer somewhere you can find it later.  Once it downloads, then you can choose Open and open the file.

Complete the lesson according to the textbook directions, then when you are all done, send it by EMAIL to me at palmerj@mjc.edu
